Rich History Unveiled

The river banks are steeped in history, from ancient Anglo-Saxon settlements to the working heritage of the local fishing and sailing communities. Our engaging commentary brings these stories to life, adding a fascinating dimension to your scenic voyage.

  • Whether the cruise is bound for Felixstowe Ferry or Woodbridge Town our skipper will highlight key places and information along the journey.

  • Sutton Hoo: The internationally renowned Anglo-Saxon royal burial ground, managed by the National Trust.

Ramsholt a Medieval Port: Ramsholt was a thriving and busy settlement in medieval times, being an historic fishing town and port where King Edward III's fleet was moored in 1346.

Waldringfield: The former Waldringfield Cement Works was a significant industrial site on the River Deben in Suffolk during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It played a major role in the village's history before its transformation into the sailing and leisure center it is today.

Bawdsey: Located where the river meets the sea and home to Bawdsey manor bought by the Government 1935 for use as a top secret search establishment.  Now famous as the RAF base where Sir Watson Watt developed Radar which played a crucial role in the WW II Battle of Britain.

  • This beautiful watercolour by Barbara Kaznica is an irreplaceable record of the River Deben's industrial era. It vividly captures the Waldringfield Cement Works, showing the prominent bottle kilns and the main chimney that once dominated the skyline.

Since the works were demolished in 1912, this painting—completed on March 13th, 1984—offers our guests a unique, personal glimpse into a vanished landscape. It’s a wonderful reminder of the river's deep industrial roots and the rich history our cruise commentary shares.
